The Streisand Effect
Streisand Effect: when you attempt to censor the
body of public knowledge but instead end up drawing everyone's attention to
what you wanted to hide.
Named for renowned singer Barbra Streisand, who sued a
photographer for megabucks for labelling her home in an aerial photograph. She
lost the lawsuit: the photography was part of a project to document coastal
erosion in California – a project whose results were publicly available. Of
course, the site was flooded when the lawsuit became news.
I thought of Ms Streisand today in connection with this post on Twitter. Alejandra Caraballo is a professor of cyberlaw at Harvard. She
received a DMCA strike on her Google Drive for having an Amnesty International
report somebody rich wanted taken out of circulation. Her document was deleted – but now outraged people are making copies, even hard
copies, where the Thought Police can't find them. The Streisand Effect in
effect.

too but it's your imagination that is different from mine. The heather was
actually on the coast. Loved the butterfly, though.
DG: That's me told. Srsly, though: does that look like the Parthenon to you?
(This looks like the Acropolis but isn't. It's in a park in Nashville, Tennessee. For, er, reasons.)

They probably weren't happy about the noise, but the
Hoggett on the tractor was only getting in the hay before the next rain.
Nobody's bothering you, chickens: the photographer's just looking through the
fence.
