Foxes Playing in (No) Traffic

by FWR

I spent a lovely half hour watching two fox cubs playing in the (thankfully deserted) roadway. One of them jumps onto a no entry sign and sits there for ages as though considering whether to contravene the highway code! Sorry for the quality of the pics but they're very skittish at this time of day. Couldn't get closer.

(Editor: We don't care, we're just glad to catch a glimpse.)

A Bit of Shameless Commerce

by DG

The daily writing prompt was miles. Yes, I know: like 'miles to go before I sleep.' I wasn't in the mood for distance, so I committed this bad joke. It's also a shameless promotion for my book Life in Potentia.

The actor cleared his throat. 'People of Potentia, tonight we will present a comedy – the Miles Gloriosus of Titus Maccius Plautus!' Enthusiastic applause from a relieved audience who'd feared a Greek tragedy. Radu muttered, 'Bring on the lovers, liars, and clowns!' 'You can't go wrong with the classics,' Pertinax commented, flapping his toga in approval. When the applause had settled down, the actor proceeded to deliver the Argument: Captain Pyrgopolynices has abducted the beautiful meretrix Philocomasium and taken her to Ephesus to be his mistress. She didn't really want to go, but he wouldn't take no for an answer and he had a big sword. . . Radu whispered, 'I've been to Ephesus. They have this awful statue of Artemis. . . ' 'I've seen it,' replied Demetrius grimly.

More Creaky Humour:

The Pun, or 'Play on Words'

By DG

This 'joke' is from a whole book of puns published in 1906. There were no laws to protect the public at that time.

Cartoon anthropomorphic cat in suit and boots which has been thrown out of an editor's office onto the street.
The other day I gave FWR an example of why I avoid puns. 'It takes me to long to realise it's a pun. For instance, I've known for years that Kurt Vonnegut based a character on his friend Theodore Sturgeon. I only got the joke last Thursday.

The character's name is Kilgore Trout.

I hate puns.

"This is our latest novelty," said the manufacturer, proudly. "Good work, isn't it?"

"Not bad," replied the visitor, "but you can't hold a candle to the goods we make."

"Oh! are you in this line, too?"

"No. We make gunpowder."

Anthropological Question of the Day:

Has Humour Improved in the Last

100 Years?

By DG

I say no. This piece of observational humour is from a 1920 joke book.

Little Willie came home in a sad state. He had a black eye and numerous scratches and contusions, and his clothes were a sight. His mother was horrified at the spectacle presented by her darling. There were tears in her eyes as she addressed him rebukingly:

"Oh, Willie, Willie! How often have I told you not to play with that naughty Peck boy!"

Little Willie regarded his mother with an expression of deepest disgust.

"Say, ma," he objected, "do I look as if I had been playing with anybody?"

We'll let ourselves out.

Look, up in the air, it's a bird…it's…a lot of birds…

Paigetheoracle wrote, 'Couple of hundred caught my attention but I missed a larger bunch of maybe five or six hundred because I was in the woods (saw them through the trees).'

The Editor downloaded the video with trepidation…a couple of hundred what? Fortunately, it was our old friends flying to their winter lodgings.

Illegal Aliens?

Makes you think. (At least, we hope so.)

Alien looking scared. Behind them their escape pod.

'Are you sure of the numbers?'

The Prime Minister looked around the COBRa attendees, seeking out his Home Sec.

'A rough estimate. But, we believe it's in that region, yes.'

'What the hell are we going to do with over one and a half million, erm, you know, of, of, erm, them?'

'Naval resources, our own, the French, Germans, and Norwegians are being deployed. Sadly the Yanks have refused point blank. We've seconded the RNLI, local fishing boats, ferries etcetera. Quite simply, this will be the greatest maritime flotilla since Dunkirk!'

'And still no intel on where they're from?'

'No, and that may be the biggest hurdle we have to manoeuvre,"  the Comms lead interjected, "Quite simply we have no idea where or what these, erm, refugees, migrants, displaced, erm, yes, no idea at all. A PR nightmare and fodder for the press on an epic scale!'

The PM glanced at the screens, sickened by the already outrageously unkind headlines on the Breaking banners.

Above the scrolling news, the grey, dark Channel, illuminated by thousands of searchlights and helicopter FLIRs.

The ships and boats circling the vast craft, as thousands upon thousands of 'aliens' disembarked the stricken starship.

In 2003, a museum in Southend abandoned plans to exhibit a 20,000-year-old, four-foot-long woolly mammoth’' tusk found in a garden in Leigh-on-Sea after a second geologist identified it as a length of Victorian drainage pipe.

We had a surprise today. Honey had babies! We didn’t know she was expecting. We thought she was just fat. She had one boy and one girl. The little girl goat died: it was born small and weak. But the boy goat is doing very well.

A Conversation About

Country Music &

Wine

DG, FWR

Rows of wine bottles with a view out the kitchen window of FWR's patio

Arrowe Wine carrot, bottled by Thingwall (FWR).
In my continuing effort to educate FWR on the difference between real country music and poseurs, I sent him a link to a song by John Prine called
Knockin' on Your Screen Door. I said: No hats. No sequins. No fake nostalgia. Just the real thing. And no, I didn't know you could make wine from sweet potatoes, either. I wouldn't know how to try.

FWR agreed to listen to more John Prine and added: I've heard Angel from Montgomery by him. Will listen to some more.

Arrowe label
I presume sweet potato wine would be a similar method to carrot or turnip wine. (Just checked – yup, it is.) Tried them last year, both taste like Madeira or a light sweet sherry. Not my fave but an interesting experiment.

The secret to finding good country music: ask somebody with the right
background. The secret to finding good wine: ask a well-travelled connoisseur and winemaker like FWR.

How did he know about carrot wine? He's made his own. When you see that Thingwall label, you know it's FWR.
