There Was an Eclipse

(even if we didn't see it)

27-28 August 2026: A lunar eclipse took place which reached its greatest peak at 04:13 Universal Time (GMT). I emailed everybody: get out and take photos, please?

 

Here are the reports. 

 

FWR was working nights: oh, good. Expert photos.

Here's what the weather did:

Picturesque.

 

Raining in Cleethorpes. Raining on the Wirral. Everybody else had the good sense to be asleep. Which left me and Elektra in Pennsylvania at midnight, standing in the backyard with a camera and tripod, to the puzzlement of the bunnies. It was kind of noisy because August is 'fix Main Street Hooverville under cover of darkness' month. Lots of loud equipment, with competing frog chorus.

 

Worse, the fog was rolling in. Low-lying fog banks are not uncommon here in Hooverville: by the time the eclipse really got started, I'm standing out back of the Post Office with a tripod, jackhammering noises, tree frog love serenades, in the middle of a fog bank.

The pictures were…not great.

I did get this one from early in the penumbra. FWR saw it and said: 'Put that in black and white and there's Exorcist vibes in that shot!'

So here it is.

 

When the next lunar eclipse rolls around, keep an eye on the weather report and a camera handy. Please.

Meanwhile, the Next Night...

SashaQ is pleased to report that the moon is none the worse for wear after all that eclipsing.

Here's a moon photo from this evening - not the lunar eclipse, but still good red colour as the Moon set.

Butterfly

The Common Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus icarus) has beautiful spots on the underside of its wings and blue on the upper side. Tavaron shared this one: h2g2's Edited Guide added the upper-wing views so all of us non-Europeans could see where the name 'Common Blue' came from.
