The Hooverville Hexagon: Holiday Snaps

The Devil's Hole

By Bluebottle

On the north coast of Jersey* lies the Devil's Hole. Known before Victorian times as Le Creux de Vis, meaning 'spiral cave', the coastal cave underwent change when the roof collapsed, creating a crater known as the Devil's Hole. In 1851 French cutter La Josephine was wrecked off the Jersey coast, with the broken figurehead found washed into the bottom of the hole through the tunnel connecting it with the sea.

Local Captain John Giffard carved the figurehead into the shape of the devil, adding arms and legs, and erected it nearby, turning the hole into a tourist attraction and corrupting the name 'Le Creux de Vis' into Devil's Hole. It is said that when the crater was smaller, when fierce storm waves crashed into the hole below the air inside the cave was pressurised and made roaring noises. In 2006 the Devil's Hole was given to the National Trust for Jersey.

*Note for US readers: This is 'old' Jersey, not New Jersey. Its real housewives are smart enough to avoid tv cameras.

Beauty Moment

A Pause for Reflection

Alesund, Norway

by Galaxy Babe

A sunny day. A white boat on the canal, which is so still that it reflects everything: the boat, the sky, the hotel, the buildings. There are tulips in the foreground.

When not falling into fjords, our intrepid explorers found time to stop and admire the tulips in this scenic country.

Quote of the Day:

The world is complicated and cannot be governed by people living inside a hallucination without eventually courting profound disaster. Someone has to think things through, at some level.
Will Stancil

Video: The Llanigon Hay Throwing Competition

The Winning Throw

By Robbie Stamp

It's the 64th year for the Llanigon Show. Our reporter (Robbie) was there. Hay was tossed. With force. Farmers showing off. Impressively high toss.

Hitchhikers and Hoovervillians, show us your holiday snaps! Tell us a story, true or almost-true!
