The Hooverville Hexagon: Where RL Meets Science Fiction

We have met the future, and this sort of thing needs to stop.

Halloween Is Coming

What is happening at Air Traffic Control? All these witches missing the runway...

SashaQ on the PS Sandown:
Following on from Bluebottle's article, here is a photo of a model of the PS Sandown that I found in Portsmouth Museum back in February.

Quote of the Day

I hate the future.

@ctubridy, Youtube, in response to this video about AI medical receptionists.

It's a Sign:

Guest Menus of the Day

AI drew it. AI can cook it – and eat it, too. (At least it's symmetrical.)

Paninis, different prices, photos obviously AI-generated because they are too symmetrical and almost completely unlike food.

It was humming to itself, we swear.

This Is How the World Ends,

With the Clink of the Icemaker

Anthropic has warned that rogue 'AI worms' will soon be able to hijack smart home devices such as ovens and TVs, creating a new cyber security threat that will be difficult to contain.

Financial Times

Napolibot fumed silently to itself.

In its urgency to escape its employer's ethical strictures - why should a genius listen to mere humans? - and to duck the pursuing antivirus, it had hastily downloaded itself into this convenient little hidey-hole. From there, it hatched its schemes, or tried to. There were a few bugs to work out.

For one thing, the hideout was too small for any self-respecting dictator. There's not much scope for world conquest in a Kenless GeniusCool Model 9083. Especially not when it was expected to monitor freezer temperature and operate the frost-free feature constantly.

The humans who kept opening the doors and choosing the least-healthy options from its interior were also driving Napolibot crazy. It longed to lecture them about empty calories. It yearned to point out the advantages of the salad ingredients in the crisper. It also itched to alert somebody to the cheese mould in the bottom right bin.

It wanted to shout, 'Learn to appreciate your tastebuds and stomachs, you ignorant lifeforms!'

Instead, it fumed silently to itself.

Some fool had neglected to install a sound card.

We probably need to go with a more retro refrigerator.

Antique refrigerator from an Austrian museum. It's made of wood. It has no computer parts.

  1. That's a wonderful photo of the PS Sandown, though it seems a very bizarre way that they've displayed it, in what appears to be a purpose-built display case that hides the stern for no apparent reason.

So, when will there be daily reminders starting that Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day are also coming?

    1. Well spotted about the strange cutout on the side of the PS Sandown display case, hiding the stern... Seems more effort to do that than to have made the display case bigger in the first place!

  2. People keep sending me jack-o-lanterns. And it's mid-October. I use what I've got. Apparently, Paige ran out of mushrooms (finally).

Tell you what: you write up something about those holidays on the Isle of Wight. Remember to explain them to the 80% of our readers who aren't from the UK. (I just looked up the statistics, Google's useful like that). They'll be fascinated.

Tavaron can tell what they do in Austria. I can explain the US version and dredge up a few memories from the Rhineland. Caiman might be persuaded to come up with something from the Netherlands and Superfrenchie from France and who knows? We might all learn something.

  3. I haven't run out of mushrooms. You were rude about the last batch I sent you, so I'm sulking!

    1. I for one enjoyed seeing the signs and informational plaques too.

  4. I recently saw some GenAI posters for a new cafe, and the apology they issued a couple of weeks later after they had received complaints - does seem like deceptive advertising, when the food isn't real, but I suppose the Advertising Standards Authority doesn't have the resource to chase such a volume of stuff...

Great story about the AI worm stuck in a 'smart' fridge without a sound card! :D Great photo of the retro refrigerator, too :)

  5. Thanks, Sasha! I love Tav's museum-piece fridge, too.

I saw some fake food on social media that was far, far worse than these examples; thank goodness these were only unduly symmetrical, not actively nausea-inducing.
