The Hooverville Hexagon: Really Wild Things

Your Daily Warning That

Halloween Is Coming

Repeat after me: YMCA, it's fun to stay at the... (Actually in the window of the Brookville YMCA.)

Foxes Playing in (No) Traffic

by FWR

I spent a lovely half hour watching two fox cubs playing in the (thankfully deserted) roadway. One of them jumps onto a no entry sign and sits there for ages as though considering whether to contravene the highway code! Sorry for the quality of the pics but they're very skittish at this time of day. Couldn't get closer.

(Editor: We don't care, we're just glad to catch a glimpse.)

Somewhere a middle school band director just felt a disturbance in the force and doesn’t know why.

A Bit of Shameless Commerce

by DG

The daily writing prompt was miles. Yes, I know: like 'miles to go before I sleep.' I wasn't in the mood for distance, so I committed this bad joke. It's also a shameless promotion for my book Life in Potentia.

The actor cleared his throat. 'People of Potentia, tonight we will present a comedy – the Miles Gloriosus of Titus Maccius Plautus!' Enthusiastic applause from a relieved audience who'd feared a Greek tragedy. Radu muttered, 'Bring on the lovers, liars, and clowns!' 'You can't go wrong with the classics,' Pertinax commented, flapping his toga in approval. When the applause had settled down, the actor proceeded to deliver the Argument: Captain Pyrgopolynices has abducted the beautiful meretrix Philocomasium and taken her to Ephesus to be his mistress. She didn't really want to go, but he wouldn't take no for an answer and he had a big sword. . . Radu whispered, 'I've been to Ephesus. They have this awful statue of Artemis. . . ' 'I've seen it,' replied Demetrius grimly.

They Don't Make 'Em Like This

Any More

She just wrote 'random old building in Hamburg'. Impressive.

Large, impressive building in Hamburg.

More Creaky Humour:

The Pun, or 'Play on Words'

By DG

This 'joke' is from a whole book of puns published in 1906. There were no laws to protect the public at that time.

Cartoon anthropomorphic cat in suit and boots which has been thrown out of an editor's office onto the street.
The other day I gave FWR an example of why I avoid puns. 'It takes me to long to realise it's a pun. For instance, I've known for years that Kurt Vonnegut based a character on his friend Theodore Sturgeon. I only got the joke last Thursday.

The character's name is Kilgore Trout.

I hate puns.

"This is our latest novelty," said the manufacturer, proudly. "Good work, isn't it?"

"Not bad," replied the visitor, "but you can't hold a candle to the goods we make."

"Oh! are you in this line, too?"

"No. We make gunpowder."

  1. Talking of which, what do you call a securely tied up boat? Maud

  2. That's probably one of those that you can only get if you talk with the same accent. I can think of three kinds of North American accent to say 'Maud' in. None of them results in a punchline. But I'll bet Bluebottle will think it's funny.

Here's one my father tried to tell in North Carolina:
Why were the Three Wise Men from the VFD (volunteer firemen)?
    Because they came from afar.

My mom told him not to tell this joke because people in western North Carolina would think he was making fun of their pronunciation. 'Fire' sounds like 'far' and both have an 'r' in them.

Being a dialectologist is a major hindrance to deriving any enjoyment, no matter how slight, from a pun.
