e-scooter that someone has parked erect in the middle of the River Itchen, just
outside Southampton.
They’ve parked it carefully next to a traffic
cone – which presumably is there to warn people that the river currently has a

This is Ganoderma tsugae, also known as hemlock
varnish shelf. It has been proposed as the state mushroom of Pennsylvania.
Fun Fact: Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, is known as
the Mushroom Capital of the World. This is why we pick our mushrooms in the
produce aisle and not in the woods, where there are too many lookalikes for
comfort.

This year has been too dry for mushrooms here. We didn‘t even attempt to search for them in the forest and they had only very small amounts in the supermarket. I am sure they must have been imported from somewhere else.

ReplyDeleteGreat video of the hawkmoth caterpillar - it is like a cartoon, with the way the segments shift as the caterpillar moves!
As private e-scooters cannot be used in public spaces it is one from Southampton's e-scooter trial, but bizarre for it to be upright and next to a cone if someone wanted to throw it away...?
